| Like all hydraulic
components, cylinders need to be rebuilt periodically. Part of the rebuild
process commonly includes restoring cylinder and rod eyes to their original
dimensions.
Transmission of cylinder forces over thousands of cycles often results
in worn, oversized or out-of-round eyes. If this wear is allowed to continue
unchecked, significant damage can be done to both the cylinder and its
anchor points on the machine.
Typically, the repair process involves weld build-up on the I.D. of the
eye, followed by machining or boring back to its specified size. This
process is slow and labor intensive. But there is an alternative.
BoreWelders from Bortech Corporation are an innovative solution for this
type of repair. The BoreWelder is a continuous, 360° rotating, MIG
welding system that can be mounted on or near the eye and apply welds
while the cylinder or rod remains stationary. And because it is portable
and easy to set-up, repairs can be performed either in shop or in the
field. Benefits include:
* Up to 80% faster than hand welding. For example, the BoreWelder can
weld a 4" deep eye with a 4" I.D. in less than 20 minutes, compared
with 1.5 hours for hand welding.
* Reduced labor costs due to shorter welding times, as well as freeing
the operator to carry out other tasks while the BoreWelder welds the eye.
For example, the operator can be welding one cylinder eye while boring
out another.
* Reduced machining time through the elimination of hard spots, which
are common with hand welding. This can reduce machining time by 50%.
* Better working conditions, with the operator spending less time behind
the mask with his head in the fumes. And no repetitive motion.
